About this tour

This immersive day trip takes you from Heraklion to the south coast of Rethymno, ending at the iconic Preveli Palm Beach, where a freshwater river flows through a palm forest and meets the Libyan Sea. A favorite of hikers, nature lovers, and free spirits alike, Preveli is one of Crete’s most photogenic landscapes.

Along the way, you’ll traverse lush mountain valleys, pass through stone-built villages, and make stops at two historic and ecological gems: the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the Monastery of Preveli. The day combines light hiking, cultural insight, and plenty of time for swimming and relaxation at a beach unlike any other.

🛑 Itinerary & Nature Stops:

  1. Departure from Heraklion (≈08:00)
We set out southward through the rolling hills and vineyards of inland Heraklion, crossing the Platania Pass as the island transitions from north to south.

  2. Stop at Spili Village (≈09:30)
A refreshing break in the mountain village of Spili, known for its stone lion-head fountains, flower gardens, and herbal shops. Optional local drink or mountain tea.

  3. Scenic Drive through Kourtaliotiko Gorge (≈10:15)
As we continue toward Preveli, we drive through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, a dramatic canyon known for its steep cliffs and rare birdlife (like the Lammergeier vulture).
Optional 10–15 min walk to the Kourtaliotis River waterfall, hidden under plane trees — a secret paradise.

  4. Stop at Preveli Monastery (≈11:00)
Perched on a hill with sweeping sea views, the historic monastery of Preveli is an important spiritual and cultural site that played a key role in Cretan resistance movements. Visit the church, museum, and learn about the monks’ connection to the surrounding ecosystem.

  5. Arrival at Preveli Palm Beach (≈11:45)
We reach the car park above the beach, where a 10–15 min hike leads down to this spectacular natural wonder:

  • A river bordered by native Cretan date palms (Phoenix theophrasti)

  • Freshwater pools where you can swim beneath fig trees

  • The river delta opening onto a wide sandy bay and crystal-clear sea

  1. Free Time at the Beach (≈12:00–14:30)

  • Swim in the river and sea

  • Walk along the riverside palm forest trail

  • Enjoy a light picnic or local snack under the trees

  • Optional kayaking or paddle rental (if available, seasonal)

  1. Ascent back to vehicle (≈14:30)
The walk back includes scenic photo stops over the Preveli delta and Libyan Sea.

  2. Short stop in Plakias or Mariou village (≈15:15)
Depending on time, we stop for a refreshment or brief meal with sea views in Plakias or a mountain taverna in Mariou.

  3. Return to Heraklion (arrival ≈17:00)
