Balos Lagoon: Crete’s Iconic Panorama
The view from above Balos Lagoon is one of the island’s most recognisable scenes. Shallow turquoise water, pale sand and the wild Gramvousa Peninsula create a landscape that looks almost unreal. Arrive early for gentler light, cooler walking conditions and more space at the viewpoint. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for the route.
Samaria Gorge and the White Mountains
For a completely different perspective, travel to the Omalos Plateau in the White Mountains. From the entrance to Samaria Gorge, limestone peaks frame a vast mountain landscape. The full hike continues through the deep gorge toward Agia Roumeli and the Libyan Sea. It is a demanding experience, so check the park’s operating status and weather conditions before travelling.

Falassarna offers broad beaches, imposing mountains and an uninterrupted western horizon. On a clear evening, the setting sun fills the coastline with warm shades of orange and gold. Stay after many daytime visitors have departed, but bring a light layer because the coast can become windy.

Mirabello Bay and Spinalonga
Eastern Crete offers calmer, more expansive views. The roads and villages around Mirabello Bay overlook brilliant blue water, rugged hills and historic Spinalonga. Elounda and Plaka are excellent places to combine the scenery with a relaxed meal beside the sea.
Crete’s finest viewpoints are more than quick photo stops. Travel early, stay awhile and allow the island’s extraordinary landscapes to unfold slowly.
